I have started tracking my food & {lack of} exercise on My Fitness Pal. This little app even has the ability to SCAN an items' bar code and instantly obtain nutrition information. You can track weight, water intake, exercise + calories in the daily food log.

I've been spending quite a little time lately virtual shopping and scheming. I've been thinking about design, colors and decorating. Thanks to Candice Olson & Nate Berkus & Pinterest I've decided my decor is tired and drab - boring. The problem is making a decision - I know what I like when I see it, but I like many different styles it is hard to formulate a solid plan! Oh, and then there is always that pesky little subject of money.
I am heavily leaning towards a blue/brown color palette - it speaks to me of nature and calm. But just when I think I've finally made up my mind....

Good Day! Welcome to Bsktgirl Street! Today's post is brought to you by the letter "G"
I picked up this metal letter G at the antique store, me thinks he'll look right spiffy with a coat of paint.

Greeting cards are arriving like crazy in our mailbox!
I love seeing family photos and reading year end summaries.
I am taking the year off - no Christmas mailer from the G household.
The truth is BSG and I couldn't manage one picture I felt was card worthy.
Next year I should start on this project earlier...note to self.

Gifts!
I took my gift wrapping inspiration from here.
I cut tags from white card stock with my cricut, used plain butcher paper (super cheap) from the craft store, stamped the tree & tag with a little holiday cheer & voila! Simple. Cute. Done!

Green
I purchased a green coat. Yes, green.
BSG says I resemble Kermit the Frog. I will take that as a compliment as Kermit is quite successful. :)
I have been searching for a winter coat and it seems to me the choices are:
1.puffy
2. black
3.brown
4. black
5.red
6.puffy
Clearly, puffy is not for me. I am already puffy. One should accentuate the positive, not the negative, right?
I wanted orange, but apparently that is thinking WAY outside the box. So, green it is!

Decked Out

BSG's fall project - staining our double decker! Pretty sure this deck has never seen a coat of stain or sealant - so to say that it was time is an understatement!
There he is...my BSG ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work!

First you must clean. BSG went to rent a power washer and came home with this applicator and a scrub brush. Apparently the power washer forces to much water into the wood and is not recommended. Plan B is to get on your hands and knees and scrub. *Labor Intensive*

As you can see, the wood was dry and in serious need of some TLC.

I was amazed at the amount of dirt, grime and green that came off with a little elbow grease.

We used Olympic Maximum Toner Waterproofing Sealant in Canyon Brown.

You should see the deck 'bead up' when it rains...like a turtle waxed new car!
I'm very pleased with our choice of color...a very rich dark brown.

wine experience

While I was in Dallas last week, we enjoyed a wine tasting in which we learned about sipping and swirling. This is the wine maven - she does in home tastings and wine education.

We tested 6 different wines and paired them with foods such as Parmesan cheese, salami and dark chocolate. Amazing how food pairings really change the wines flavor. So yummy!

Apparently putting my thoughts into sentences is not going to happen for me tonight...
I uploaded this poster and have been staring at the blinking cursor for 45 minutes.
I think he (the cursor) is taunting me.
This post is quickly turning into a stream of consciousness...hang on, here we go!

* My Cowboys are sucking serious wind.

* I quit my job. I am NOT able to settle for mediocre when it comes to the care of my babies. I followed my gut instinct and decided it would be best to keep moving.

* I start my new gig Nov. 7th - not looking forward to being the 'new girl' again, but excited for the opportunity.

* Thoroughly enjoyed the World Series, right up until game 7 when the Rangers lost.

* Spent three glorious days in Texas with my best girls - love them!

* Footloose was fantastic - makes me wanna dance!

* I ~~want~~ need leopard print ballet flats - but where?

* Thinking of starting my Christmas shopping this week.

* I stood in line, at the crack of dawn, for a freaking phone - and I do not regret it.

* BSG & I are addicted to the Big Bang Theory - might be the new Seinfeld.

The season is autumn and October is the time for harvest. My parents have been farming in northern Iowa for 40 years - I am proud of the important work they do - feeding the world. Harvest is an exciting time filled with long days, hard work and plenty of dust! {aaaachoo} I was happy to take BSG home {to Iowa} to experience harvest - BSG gets photo credit on all the images in this post.
The soybean fields had been harvested by the time we arrived - so lets talk about corn, shall we?
Come along my friends and I'll give you a tour.

This golden ear is ready and waiting to be harvested.
Iowa ranks #1 in the US in Corn and Soybean production.

The combine is the work horse - a big, powerful machine that is quite efficient at cutting the stalk, removing the corn from the cob and discarding everything else out the backside. The grain is collected in the hopper on top and is unloaded via the auger you see on the right side.

Inside the combine is all high tech - like a wi-fi hot spot - the computer calculates yield per acre, moisture content and a time when you will complete that field. My favorite part is the comfortable seat to the left of the king...years ago to ride in the combine meant perching on the arm rest - now you get your very own seat! It's the small things.

This post is starting to look like a John Deere advertisment, isnt it?

When the hopper is full, the grain is emptied into wagons and transported to bins for storage.

A trap door on the side of the wagon cranks open, the grain pours out into the auger and is elevated into the silver bins for storage.

The Iowa Hawkeye football helmets sport a sticker with three letters...ANF
That sticker stands for America Needs Farmers.

Today's American farmer feeds about 155 people worldwide.

Now, go thank a Farmer!!!

life is like riding a bicycle...

As promised, hummingbird photos - courtesy of BSG.

This is a female ruby throated hummingbird, on loan for just a short time as they pass through Missouri headed for a warm winter in Mexico. These little birds are ah.maz.ing. They are a mere 3 inches tall, weigh 1/8 of an ounce, can fly up to 60 mph and migrate up to 500 miles! Another fun fact - they lay 2 peanut sized eggs! I am completely enamored with these fine little creatures - I have been diligent about changing the nectar in their feeders every three days and they have rewarded my efforts by continuing to visit.

I actually have been busy, although you'd never know it by what I have been blogging lately! I have hesitated posting because I absolutely love getting on here and seeing the baby Rachel post - one of my favorites! *insert baby talk here* So cute, no?
This week BSG and I did some work outside - new mulch, a couple of stepping stones strategically placed, trimmed the out of control willow bushes that threatened to swallow up the deck and replaced some rotten wood on said deck. BSG intends to stain the deck yet this fall, sounds like a big project to me!

Floor to ceiling windows line the entire west side of this house...gorgeous, life affirming sunshine pours in and I love it! The maid got busy and cleaned those windows inside AND out this week - before you get excited, the maid is me - yup, I do windows.
The cook had one epic fail with her attempt at sweet & sour chicken - um, yucky. And one epic win with taco soup - before you get excited, the cook is also me!
BSG and I purchased our very first piece of antique furniture in a small table for the entry - details to follow.

My {baby} sister announced at Christmas that our family would grow

by two feet come August.

Several months ago I asked permission to be present at the delivery. I wanted to be there for several reasons - I have attended hundreds of deliveries as a nurse, but never as a family member and never of someone whom I loved. I was living in Fort Worth and completely missed the birth of Emma, Madie, Jacob, Ryan and Matthew - that, my friends, is a LOT to miss! I will {probably} never have a baby and I wanted to live vicariously. All that being said, Mark & Betsy graciously agreed and I was honored to be present when baby Rachel entered this world!!!

8 lb 1 oz and 20 inches long - perfection!

Just moments after her birth she was wide eyed and eager to see her new world!
I must say that my sister was a rockstar through labor and delivery...she rocked it. So proud of you!

Girls Weekend | 2011

Four of my best girls in KC for one awesome weekend...thanks for making the road trip!

No visit to Kansas City is complete without a stop at the Country Club Plaza...

or some finger lickin BBQ at Jack Stacks!

BSG skipped the plaza, but was not getting left out on the burnt ends!

A road trip within a road trip...we motored to Iowa for the Iowa State Fair!!! The fair is on the list of 1,000 things to do before you die, yup, it is that good!

Southern Iowa has a large population of Amish folks...the signs warn you to be aware of the buggies! We made a quick stop in Lamoni where I asked the local old farts having coffee where I could get some fresh sweetcorn. They directed us straight to the source, a Amish farmstead just a mile up the road.

The lovely Amish gentleman picked us a fresh dozen straight from the field for 3 bucks! Nothing beats that! I have been bragging on Iowa sweet corn to these ladies for years! It did not disappoint...yummy!

I really like this picture - so much going on here! The tandem flags, the gold state capital building in the distance, sky glider and all the people on the main drag of the fairgrounds!

On our first visit this Momma was in labor with her bag of waters partially delivered - we stopped back several hours later to find this little newbie!

Fair food!!! Let me just say this...I entered the fairgrounds and had a funnel cake in hand within 10 minutes. I declared it a calorie free zone...you can do that, right?

Wine tasting...one of the most important attractions!
Hands down the "State Fair Red" won our mini poll.

Sylvia splurged on tickets for all of us to ride 'Ye Old Mill -

wow, what an exciting ride?!

Actually, there is a very good reason I've never rode this before and never will again...you sit in a boat, travel through water, most of the ride is in the dark and you see a couple state fair ads. That's it. What? Huh?

In the evening we rocked the Heart/Def Leopard concert!

Ice Cream Social | Birthday

On Saturday we celebrated my birthday with an old fashioned ice cream social. I had fun planning this little wing ding ... food and games and FUN! Having lived in Texas for the past 10 years and having an August birthday meant no family birthday parties ... because no sane person goes to ~~Hades~~ Texas in August on purpose! :)

Thank goodness there is no furniture in the parlor, because it was the perfect indoor venue for playing with the Limbo stick, doing the chicken dance and cracking at the cone shaped (of course) Pinata! There was quiet the frenzy when the 3lbs of candy dropped!

The day was chuck full of activities and food!

We packed up the kiddos and chilled at the pool

and enjoyed chicken k-bobs from the grill & (my favorite) party potatoes!

We had fun with rock star glasses and fake moustaches!

I've been working on this project off and on for what, 9 months now? Time to wrap it up and give BSG his due space in the garage! First I removed the (yucky) old seat and wiped the cobwebs off.

Sanded.

Primed.

Two coats of paint - a tad too close to the car, I might add. Whoops.

Recovered the seat with new padding and some chic fabric.

Nate Berkus would be proud, no? And....voila! the finished product, ready to increase the cute factor in any room!

guest bedroom | part 1

We, and by we, I mean mostly me, have been working on sprucing up the second guest bedroom. BSG has many talents but the finesse of painting over new carpet is not one of them! Until recently this room was used as a store-all for luggage, baskets and un-used decorations. I have hesitated painting or re-doing this room because of these shelves...strategically placed about 2 feet from the ceiling ALL the way around the room.

BSG's part in this = shelf removal.

When the first one came down we were instantly aware of the gigantic drywall mess that lie ahead. The genius who installed them meant business...lots of nails with a side of glue.

This is certainly not the last you'll hear about drywall...we have wall paper to remove! :)

One call to my friend Julie (our Realtor) and I had the name of her general contractor for such things. The holes are all patched up and after 2 coats of Benjamin Moore HC-80 Bleeker Beige the shelves are a distant memory!

A few weeks ago we picked up this quilt at HomeGoods at a low price so ridiculous that I couldn't pass it up! I am building the room around these bright, fun, beachy colors. Now that the painting is complete, maybe we can move the mattress and box spring out of the front room! :) More details upon project completion!

One of my *favorite* things about living in KC is that DSM is only a short jaunt up the road and I can be involved in family fun! Sunday we celebrated our fabulous Dad...
(still perfecting this new low light lens...Betsy is a bit blurry...darn it)

We also celebrated Mr Ryan and his 3rd birthday...
He was so excited and when asked what he wanted for his birthday - he relied - "cake"
A super cute, homemade Dr Seuss cake!
Shortly after he blew the candles, he grabbed the plate, pulled that big 'ol cake towards him and licked the edge - so funny! We made sure that was HIS piece!

The children donned their suits and took a dip in the kiddie pool after lunch...perfect refresher on a hot and humid day!

Skinny little things...clearly they need more cake! :)

While I was at Betsy's this weekend I spied a childhood book that sparked a memory and made me smile alittle... Walt Disney's Uncle Remus Stories with its broken binding, colorful illustrations and nearly impossible text. I remember choosing this book and Mom gently suggesting I pick another...now, as an adult, I understand why!

Every six weeks I have a long stretch off built into my master schedule - the sad part - it only comes around every six weeks! :) BSG and I have been busy getting out and about enjoying each other and the weather! We headed over to Crossroads, an outdoor venue in the heart of downtown KC to see the Old Crow Medicine Show. SO much fun, y'all. An 'alternative' crowd to say the least, but a rock'in good time none the less. Check 'em out, you can't help but tap a toe. One of my favorite lyrics from the song 'We're All in This Thing Together'....

One of our goals for this summer: to take in some local festivals. In the spirit of adventure and 'cuz we have never done it before we went to a Draft Horse Pull. BSG has photos of the animals...you can tell where my priorities where... ( pic's of the amazing animals soon! )

And then...as if that wasn't enough fun...I got to spend Sunday with the bestest Dad in the world and celebrate the birthday of one awesome little 3 year old. ( more of those pics also to follow! )

It is shaping up to be one fantastic summer...lots more planned...stay tuned!

The previous homeowners left these awesome planters...possibly because they are darned heavy. They live on the deck in the backyard - I like the patina and vintage feel.

Verbena. I had concerns about these at first, they looked a bit sickly....but have rebounded nicely with a little sunshine and warm weather.

The previous owners also left these little guys...they be my homey gnomeys!

Wave Petunia. These guys have mad growing skillz - I like the constant supply of color!

Have you seen the Decorah Eagles lately? "My" babies are almost grown up and are expected to fledge the end of this month....serious empty nest syndrome when that happens!

I've been busy making A B C books similar to these for my nephews, Matthew & Ryan. I used a 6x6 paper pack from My Minds Eye called Lime Twist...loving how the pages have turned out! It took some figuring to solve the lamination dilemma I was having, but this machine took care of that. My next step is to have the books spiral bound and voila! 3rd birthday gifts are done!

This week my friend Lori came to visit and we had a fabulous time!
A little history...I was Lori's RN preceptor in Dallas when she was a new graduate.
I enjoyed working with her because she is a sharp one and eager to learn.

One of the main items on the agenda - the Princess Diana exhibit at Union Station.

Thankfully the exhibit was in the basement, because the tornado sirens were a blaring and the skies ugly...sadly, a routine sight around here lately.

I was amazed by the volumes of condolence books written for Diana, the impressive family tree and the diamond tiara...holy wow, it is good to be a princess!

We got caught up on the latest, took in a movie, got our toes done and ate. Oh boy did we eat....as evidenced by the shopping cart of truffle fries...

and a cupcake for desert from Cupcake A La Mode!

Sadly, guitarist Richie Sambora had entered rehab, missing the Des Moines stop of the tour. However, the rest of the band rallied and ROCKED the HOUSE!!! All Jon had to do was flash that boyish grin and all was forgiven! *swoon* He played for 2 hours straight - in all his sweaty/hot glory putting on a booty shaking show for all the middle aged gals in the crowd! :)

I love these girls so much! Thanks for making a memory with me!

Birdie Buffet, and stuff.

The spring version of our birdie buffet is in full swing. We are enjoying such a wide variety of birds, so much so that we have had to refer to the birdie bible.
This golden beauty is a male Goldfinch, the Iowa state bird, by the way.

The much anticipated star of the spring buffet, the Baltimore Orioles, have arrived - we are still awaiting the appearance of the Hummingbird and Indigo Buntings.

Oh my gosh, people...these guys are so beautiful and as orange as the orangest orange!
They eat the flesh from the oranges and word has it they love grape jelly too.

My guess is that this is either a female or a juvenile. She looks a bit unkempt and mangy but is was a rainy day and who doesn't have bad ~~feathers~~ hair days when it rains?!?

Just added to the buffet today - this feeder to serve up the before mentioned treats!

In other news...We have been busy planting flowers and making landscape alterations. I have been pleasantly suprised at the number of flowering trees, shrubs and plants around the neighborhood. Springtime is my favorite time of the year and experiencing it back here in the Midwest is like a whole new world! I love my walks at dusk with Tanner -after the wind has died down and the fragrance is heavy in the air.

I did not plan to participate in the sale, after all, I did a thorough purging before the move. However, the peer pressure got to me and I set out to try and find a deal. I made it to three garages and went home. I tried, I really did. The garage sale is just not my 'thing.' I have plenty of my own junk and it un-nerves me the way people sit in their lawn chairs and stare at you while you judge their junk. Eeesh.
Once I arrived home from my abbreviated garage experiment and saw how ravenous these people where I decided to put my white wicker chairs on the curb...they were perfect for the sun room in Texas but we really do not have a place for them here. I made a couple of "FREE" signs, taped them to the chairs, and this is a true story...before I got the second chair to the curb a couple had stopped and were shoving the chair into the back of their SUV! I also disposed of an old metal shelving unit before the days end. Amazing.

Tonight, a hodge podge of left over pictures and some randomness-
I brought this little do-dad home with me from Ikea...it was in at least a million pieces and I assembled it all by myself! I plan to use it -where else? - in the studio to store paper. I love the fact that it is on casters for easy mobility.

The base boards have been taped off and ready to paint since the end of March.
*hangs head in shame*
I finally had a day off with enough energy to tackle this project...the green tape is gone and the paint is fresh!
Add to that, a painted guest bedroom and I am one productive girl!

I do not think I posted any pictures of the new carpet...
Tanner is lounging on it above and below the staircase - all fresh & new!

My craft studio color scheme was meant to be turquoise & tangerine. As I look around there is precious little tangerine and loads of turquoise. So, my goal lately has been to add some Tangerine to my life!

I am in love with these paper lanterns I picked up at Hobby Lobby. They add to the whimsy of the room and a much needed jolt of tangerine!

I wish it was appropriate to hang them in *every* room! That is how much i like 'em!

Another small dose of Tangerine came in the form of these storage boxes from Ikea. Have you been to Ikea...? That place rocks my world! Seriously.

BSG is all about birds lately...see the latest photos here. The folks at our local bird store informed us that the Hummingbirds & Baltimore Orioles should be arriving in the area this week. In hopes of luring them to *our* birdie buffet I put up a Hummingbird feeder...this one attaches to the window with suction cups and has some very neat features. The outer plastic ring is a water moat to keep ants from invading the nectar. A interesting tip the bird experts shared with me is that if you only fill the red part half way full of nectar (basically just sugar & water) then the bees & wasps cannot get their little 'tongues' (?) into the feeding ports but the Hummingbirds can! Super thinking, huh? And for the Orioles...I have placed halved oranges on the hook ends of the wrought iron hangers. If we can attract them to our buffet I plan to add some grape jelly for desert!

I have always wanted one of these straw dispensers!!! Silly? Maybe.

The swirl of unexpected color reminds me of a carnival or the long gone Dutch Treat ice cream shoppe in my Grandma's home town. Happy. Just happy.

Spring Trippin' in Texas

Oy Vay! Look at the time! I haven't posted in quite awhile! Lets catch you up...
Our move to KC did not stop us from taking our annual spring Texas trip! We spent a long weekend in DFW and soaked up every minute!

We strolled cobble streets & popped in and out of shops ... I am in love with the vibe, the feel, the magic that is downtown Fort Worth. Muuuaaah! I have missed you.

That BFF of mine is quite the planner and loves to have a party...so a bunch of our nurse friends got together for a KC Sucks Party - version 2! It was so wonderful to love on everyone again - I have missed my 'Texas family' so very much these past six months.

We played Rock Band...at first glance it appears BSG is channeling his inner Bret Michael's...nope, he is actually hiding from the camera. :) Stinker. But seriously, for his first time ever playing, he was really good. He gots the beat!

Libby didn't seem to mind our visit. She loves to play fetch and is re.lent.less in her pleading...

Last week we had a short glimpse of spring 'round these parts and we seized the opportunity to enjoy the weather, have a tall cold one and use our fancy pants grill. The grill came with the house as it is 'plumbed' with gas into the deck. The fancy grill is way bigger than necessary for two measly little chickens - but might come in handy this summer grilling for more than just two!

BSG was testing out his new Minolta 50mm lens. I have my sights set on it as I love to shoot in macro and this lens give an interesting aperture. Can't wait for the spring blooms so that I will have some interesting subjects to practice on!

BSG 'sneaking' up on me ... but I was ready for him!

In the re-model cross hairs is the master bath...since day #1 the master bathroom carpet has been my nemesis. All the carpet upstairs, actually. El Yucko! It was matted, the pad essentially gone and dirty. I realize that for a home builder carpet is an inexpensive alternative to tile, but carpet in a bathroom is just wrong. Wrong I say!!!

they are just in need of updated hardware and eventually granite tops

...lovely, no?

BSG and I picked out new tile for the master bath and carpet for the second floor.
The carpet is on order and should arrive by the end of the month.

The potty closet...toilet sticker is gone and the walls are freshly painted in Ben Moore Bleeker Beige HC-80.
Bleeker was the winner - after much indecision and agony, and the awesome suggestion of my sister - as base paint color for the entire house.
I am still searching for the perfect rubbed bronze paper holder, because, after all, the paper holder is an important choice! I will choose an accent color once I find the perfect bedspread, quilt or duvet for the bed....it may be awhile. ;)

New knobs, pulls and hinges = voila!

BSG and I are finally getting our schedules to mesh so that we actually have some days off together! Last week we traveled up the road a ways to St. Joseph, MO to look around a bit. This Midwest town is steeped in history from Jesse James to the Pony Express with incredible architecture everywhere you turn. I was loving the vintage signage...

A true 'sign of the times' is the boarded business fronts and for sale/lease signs. It was obvious to me that at one time this was a bustling city, a last stop for provisions before heading to new western frontiers, a place of pride. Now? Not so much. Like so many cities the businesses have moved out and decay has moved in. No jobs = no money = urban decay. I felt sadness and worry for the state of our country and the direction we are headed.

Oh, hello friends!
Sorry I have been MIA lately.
I wish I could tell you that my absence was due to an exotic
vacation with my beloved - nope.
The daily grind is in full force around here...
winter blahs, work, groceries | repeat.
I've been having visions of patio furniture, blooming flowers
and fresh cut grass...soon, hopefully soon!

BSG is the birthday boy this week!

He said he did not need a cake...SO...I made cupcakes - you know, for Valentines Day!

I'm complaining about the winter blahs

but we are having a regular heat wave 'round here.

With all the positives like melting snow & temps near 60 degrees

there are negatives - muddy feet & bucket baths!

We met every morning at 9:00 am - around then is when
we filtered in and out of Mom & Dads room for a bite
of breakfast. Then we congregated outside our rooms
collecting keys, strollers, coats (do we need one?)

We interrupt our regularly scheduled Disney programming for an easy-peasy project.
{idea copied from the creative genius, Martha}
You start with a cheapo, relatively ugly, $7.99 boot tray.

Then you get crazy looks when you ask for rocks - in the dead of winter -

at the local home improvement store. I bought rainbow rock,

however, there are many to choose

from and one bag will be plenty @ $3.94 a bag.

I found the rocks to be extremely dirty.

So I washed 'em.

"What did you do today, Michelle?"

"Um, I washed rocks."
Fabulous.

As I was washing the red dirt off, I thought to myself...

Are these Oklahoma rainbow rocks?

Sure enough, look at the label!

They really are quite pretty all shined up!

Then you fill the tray, place it by the front door & voila!

For a grand total of 12.00 bucks a stylish place to put yer boots!

And with any luck, minimize the puddles in the entryway.

Total of 19 inches of snow and counting...eek!

We arrived at Magic Kingdom a little lost...

but a kind stranger pointed us in the right direction.

I found a charming prince in front of the castle! :)

The kids found a White Rabbit.

It was a super idea (mom/angie) to make little autograph books for the kids.

I think they got signatures from all the major players!

We just returned home from a most incredible adventure to
Walt Disney World in Florida!!!
We went there for a very special reason...
to celebrate my parents and their 40 years of marriage.

Ironically, Walt Disney World is also celebrating 40 years!

Super cool, me thinks!

Disney staff spoiled Mom & Dad with Anniversary love at every turn!

Disney is the *perfect* place for a celebration...first class, A+, highest praise!

I was blessed with *THE BEST* parents -

I started this post a while back,
back when the studio was clean & tidy -
before I actually *used* it!
I'm still tweaking things and today I found another stash of
letters, stickers and other embellishments that need a home.

White milk glass looks snappy in here!

The turquoise planter (perfect color, BTW) was an Ebay find this spring.

Remember when I had the home grown herb idea?

That was a big flop, so it has been re-purposed as a brush holder!

The tangerine felt album was from my super sweet swap partner, Sarah.

The "CraftsGirl" - the top needs work...to be continued.

The Craftsmen was BSG's idea...perfect for storage before the studio, perfect

IN the studio, I love it!

The Longaberger basket is for scraps to be recycled.

I'm quite fond of these little gems - lacquer frames from Pottery Barn.

Hi Ho, spaghetti-o!
Sorry for the hiatus, I've been busy
with Christmas preparations! Yay!
BSG and I made a date to pick up
a tree Saturday and to decorate on Sunday.
Exciting to decorate a new place - still pondering
exterior lights.
I've decided to go with gift bags this year...
no boxes, no wrapping -
easy, simple, done!
We have a good start on the shopping, but
there is still plenty to do!

The other project occuping much of my time...

the ginormous 'manual' that is NICU orientation.

NRP recertification, checklists and competencies...oh my!

There has been no white stuff in KC yet,

but the tempuratures are a mite chilly

and the wind....eeck!

I resorted to a stocking cap

and a Carhart -

certianly not the pinnacle of fashion,

but at least I'll be warm!

I think the prozac has started working -

for Tanner, not me, FYI. ;)

We have had several really good days.

We have been working on breaking this cycle of panic and co-dependence.

Some really smart 'dog' people (whom are blessings to us)

have suggested some techniques and behavior modifications.

The behaviors being modified are more ours than Tanners.

Prozac anyone?

I started my dog on Prozac. Yup. I sure did.
Poor baby.
He is just not 'coping' well.
Tanner has always been prone to anxiety issues,
probably stemming from his puppy hood where he
was neglected, abused and sent to a shelter.
English Springers Spaniels, as a breed, are prone to
separation anxiety issues.
They *love* being with their people and strive to please.
Tanner is extremely attached to me and follows me EVERYWHERE...
this is quite flattering - practical? - not so much.

A perfect angel when we are at home but when left alone he fa-REAKS out.

A genuine panic attack.

In his mania he has managed to...

1. Push his head through 3 window screens.

2. Dig/scratch the kitchen pantry door.

3. 'Mark' his scent in the living room - a couple of times.

4. Break the door out of the vari-kennel on the HINGED side and once free in the garage,

he proceeded to scratch the hell out of BOTH sides of my car in an attempt to

get inside.

5. Open the garage door and let himself into the house.

{when we left him in the garage in a futile attempt to contain his bad self}

6. Baby gate? He laughs in the face of a baby gate, they are no match for him!

7. Dig/scratch at the front door and garage door frames - peeling paint and chewing wood trim.

8. I wont even go into the maxi pad incident of 2010 --- you're welcome.

Clearly, we needed some assistance. I found a vet who actually

owns a Springer and can relate to the neurosis.

Dr F spent over an hour with us - complete history, physical exam, blood work.

He also gave me some great suggestions on how to re-train our fine furried friend.

*so happy with him*

Additionally, he prescribed Tanner Prozac to help take the edge off.

All of Tanners lab work came back normal - fit as a fiddle! :)

We needed to rule out something physical causing him stress.

I am hopefully optimistic that a few new techniques + the medication

will help us, help him.

Better living through pharmaceuticals!!! I hope.

Whew - am I tired! I spent all week in hospital orientation, 8-4:30 everyday.
It was something to endure, for sure. First of all, I am not accustomed to
working...remember, I've been off since mid September, secondly even full time
as a nurse it is only three days a week and thirdly most of the
content related to adult patients. I salute those of you who work 9-5 daily
AND those who do adult nursing. Seriously, I will NEVER do adult nursing
ever again...we went into the adult CCU and I broke out in hives. Eww.
That said, I'm feeling very hopeful about this new gig and the hospital as a whole.

Friday night my sisters came into town!

We enjoyed dinner and conversation over a bottle of wine.

I *love* living so close to family!

Special thanks to Mom|Grandma for watching the boys so that we could

have some great sister time!

PS: What is up with Blogger & this weirdo spacing?!?!? Angers me. Just sayin.

Before -
It was not a huge, impressive remodel...just some
paint and accessories to spruce things up a bit. I tried to use
things I already had and shuffle things around.
I'm not a huge fan of wallpaper, but have chosen to pick my battles carefully.
The Christmas stripe paper in the master bath trumps this!
The paper is subtle with acceptable colors, so I will let it linger.

Eventually, I would like to replace the linoleum and carpet with tile.

The previous owner had started to replace the gold fixtures - we finished.

Do you not love that light fixture?

So sorry to expose you to my floppy chicken wing. Gross.

The hardware...gold & white...'nough said.

I brought home a handful of paint samples & decided on 'soft camel'

for the shower/potty room. I repainted the ceiling & trim.

We brought home a new faucet also, but some genius soldered

the pipes...so we must hire a plumber to change it out.

I decided to wait and do both this and the master at the same time.

After -

I really like this light fixture and the mottled globes.

I picked up the soap dish & tissue holder at Bed Bath & Beyond in rubbed bronze

and the little clock is from Pottery Barn several years ago.

I used the white rug & shower curtain from my master bathroom in Texas.

Good gracious there are a LOT of choices.

I decided on a simple, modern design that did not cost $7.00 per.

I am rather happy with the color and quality of the cabinets in the house.

I scrubbed with Murphy's Oil soap and added the knobs...perfect.

Soft camel turned out to be a nice compliment to the paper and flooring.

I added the lead crystal atomizer - a gift from years ago that I have never really

had a place to display.

I will add some art to the walls when I find just the right piece.
