The road trip was a success! Our trip mileage totalled 750 miles...and we never left Texas! {big 'ol state, that Texas!} We arrived home last night around midnight...a bit later than expected because Interstate 35 was closed due to high water!!! Texas got bombed with heavy rain & thunderstorms yesterday and we are bracing for round two as I type! Instead of sitting in a bumper to bumper traffic jam at 11:00 pm Brian & choose to bail off the interstate and take the 'scenic route' around. We used Brian's Texas Gazetteer and found small farm to market roads to bi pass the flooding....sort of! There were several areas of water over the roadway, but no road closures. Anyhoo...back to the fun stuff!
"So baby lets sell your diamond ring,
Buy some boots & faded jeans and go away...
This coat & tie is choking me...
In your high society you cry all day.
We've been so busy keeping up with the Jones'
Four car garage and we're still building on.
Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of love.
Let's go to Luckenbach Texas with Waylon and Willie and the boys..."
~Waylon Jennings, 1978
This is our second trip to Luckenbach. We love it. The town is somewhat difficult to find because people steal the road signs...I suppose to hang in their garages, bars or bedrooms. The population is 3. The 'downtown' consists of probably five buildings. The post office & dance hall are a must see. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed. There are no worries about material things. You can get a tee shirt, a hat, a bumper sticker or a beer and that is about it. The area 'old timers' broke out the guitars and serenaded us with country songs. The resident chickens moved into the trees to enjoy the music & secure their perch for the night. Makes me wish for simpler times and country living...sounds like a cliche' but it is the truth. {Hey, you drive to Dallas a couple of times at rush hour & you'll understand!}
Speaking of bumper stickers...I had to have this one!
Another step back in time...the small town of Gruene, Texas. This hidden treasure just north of New Braunfels and is well worth the time to stop & look around.
This is a photo of the bald eagles' nest I mentioned in my last posting. The thing is enormous! Evidently the pair return to Llano every year. We were hoping to actually see the eagles and their baby but no such luck. Others have had a chance to capture the awesome birds on film...check out the photos here.
